John Waters on Comme des Garçons

"Rei Kawakubo invented looking like you got ripped off in a thrift shop. She’s an artist and not trying to be funny exactly, but she’s using wit. My father will never get the joke; he says, “You bought that?!” I wear these things to redneck bars and people would never guess I paid a lot of money for them, It makes me chuckle. But I think it’s the youth that make high fashion pretentious. When I was young I just wore what I could get. You look silly in proper fashion when you’re young but once you’re over 40 you need all the help you can get. I basically pay too much money for clothes that poor people would be embarrassed to wear. Wearing Comme des Garçons is wearing high fashion, but without bragging. And that’s the key, that’s old money and the opposite of nouveau riche."

If I had a store

When I open my own menswear store in like 30 years or so I would love it to have elements of the new Dover Street Market Comme des Garcons store that opened up in Ginza, Tokyo. As with the Edwin store and many others that have a very Scandinavian approach (see Tres Bien Shop or Present) to aesthetics and design I would want lots of clean lines so that you could actually see the product, touch it or smell it (I did it in Liberty London with a pair of Naked and Famous scratch and sniff jeans, they smelt like raspberry).

Speaking on the new store i-D said
Headlining the rails, COMME des GARÇONS will share the spotlight with sister brands Junya Watanabe, Ganryu and PLAY CdG. There’ll be menswear aplenty from Raf Simons, House of Billiam and Thom Browne, with Supreme, Vans and A Bathing Ape all be putting in appearances too. Louis Vuitton are popping-up with Kim Jones’ SS12 mens collection and a kitsch DSM vending machine comes complete with Visvim mural painted by Brit artist Andy Hillman. Homegrown, Japanese talent such as Sacai will feature alongside Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Alexander Wang, Ann Demeulemeester, Céline and YSL, and DSM’s bread and butter; Azzedine Alaïa, will sit pride of place on the pinnacle sixth floor. Zipping straight to the top of the shopping pops, the East Wing of the store will connect with UNIQLO’s brand-new flagship store.

COMME des GARÇONS SHIRT x Supreme now at Dover Street Market

The new collaboration between Comme des Garcons and Supreme is now available. Unfortunately, and to my chagrin, the hoodies are sold out, the shirts are far too expensive for me and the t-shirts seem a bit of a cop out to me. I'm feeling the hats though, and they're quite cheap especially compared to some of the other items in the collection. Check the items out below.

These are the items that I want
